The 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps was celebrated across the world by more than 1.3 million individuals participating in close to 2,000 events in more than 80 countries and all 50 states. The epicenter of these events was in Washington DC over the 3rd weekend in September, 2011. David Lena was the exclusive photographer assigned to the task of covering 6 major events including a discussion in the Capitol Hill Visitors Center organized by Congressman Sam Farr; a panel discussion moderated by renowned journalist Bill Moyers at the National Theatre with former President Alejandro Toledo of Peru, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of Nigeria, and former Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan; a stellar Gala with "HARDBALL" host Chris Matthews as the Master of Ceremony and speaker Tim Shriver; a reunion of the living directors of the Peace Corps hosted by Senator Rockefeller; a poignant commemorative event at Arlington Cemetery with Journalist Maureen Orth as the Master of Ceremony with speakers Senator Chris Dodd, Joe Kennedy III, Maeve Townsend, Vice President of Liberia Joseph Boakai, Director of the Peace Corps Aaron Williams, Chris Austin and President of the National Peace Corps Association Kevin Quigley with a performance by the Duke Ellington Choir; and a colorful parade of the 139 Peace Corps country flags involving thousands of Peace Corps volunteers from across the country.
